Join Our Discussion Forum
Did you know that we have more than 1,447 members with profiles on Climate Interpreter? That’s a really impressive community of support for climate communication! But who are we as a community? If you haven’t yet checked out our members map, be sure to give it a look. It’s a great way to get a sense for who (and where) we are. You can navigate the map to view our membership by region, search for a particular person by name, or sort according to people’s areas of interest and levels and types of training.
For example, the 373 members of the NNOCCI Alumni Group are professional interpreters who have been through a months-long, intensive “Study Circle” training through the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI), which prepares participants to become trainers on communicating climate science and solutions using social science research-based techniques.
Others among you are friends of NNOCCI, who are affiliated with NNOCCI member institutions or have had some other form of exposure to our shared communications style, called Strategic Framing® (developed by our research partners at Frameworks Institute). And some of you are professionals or passionate members of the public who are looking to connect, learn, access resources, and maybe even become a NNOCCI trainer or practitioner for yourselves. All of you are in the right place!
Climate Interpreter is the online home of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation. This site is a meeting place for our trainers to connect with each other and the public. To facilitate connection between NNOCCI trainers and friends of NNOCCI or members of the general public (A.K.A new friends of NNOCCI!), we’re launching a Discussion Forum, which can be joined by anyone with a profile on the Climate Interpreter site. This will allow us all to communicate with each other directly, in a private space that’s perfect for posing questions, collaborating on projects, sharing thoughts and ideas, and getting special updates on upcoming training opportunities.
If you’re reading this and you don’t yet have a profile on our site, it’s easy to create one! You should receive approval from site administrators within a few days. If you do already have a profile, be sure to sign in to make sure your contact information and personal details are up to date. If it’s been a while since your last log-in, you’ll also be prompted to accept our new user agreement and terms of service, so that your account stays active.
Once you’re logged in to your profile, follow the steps below to get added to the new Discussion Forum. Posts inside this group will be viewable only to members of the group and will also be emailed out (only to group members) via the Climate Interpreter Email Digest. This helps make sure the members of the group see and respond to your posts. So let’s get started. Share, inquire, and collaborate!
Step 1) Log in to your Climate Interpreter profile, then follow this link to the Discussion Forum group. You can also access the group (or find it again later) by clicking on the “Community” tab of our website, then scrolling down below the map to the groups section and clicking on the Discussion Forum group at the top. Either route will bring you to the group page. You won’t yet be able to see the content of posts in this space, since you haven’t been officially added to the group. It will look like the image below.
Step 2) Scroll down to the bottom of the group page, below the member profile images to the “Group Preferences” section, click the link to “Request group membership”. Check the image below for a visualization.
Step 3) You will be taken to a request submission form, where you can include a message to the administrators of the group, if you like (not required). Click “Join” to submit your membership request. (See example below)
Step 4) When you submit your request, it will take you back to the group page. You still won’t yet be able to see the discussion content, because your membership request is in the approval cue awaiting administrator review. However, if you check your email inbox, you’ll have a confirmation email letting you know that your request has been received.
Please allow up to four days for your request to be approved. You’ll receive another confirmation email when this takes place. Once you’re added, you’ll see the group listed in the “Groups” section on your profile page, and when you click into the group, you’ll now be able to see the full content of discussions, post and respond to discussions yourself, and add resources for the group.
