Along with our sustainability commitment to reduce our emissions by 20% by 2020 through solid waste management, green energy and design practices, water reduction and education and outreach, we are honored to have been the AZA’s 2011 Green Zoo selection for Sustainability.
Initiatives include the Zoo Green Team focusing on active management in the areas of solid waste disposal (recycling, composting, ZooDoo), water reduction (porous concrete/green design), energy conversion to clean energy (solar carousel, geothermal penguin pool, electric vehicles in zoo fleet, LEED certified buildings and plaza, LED lighting), and a large scale internal and public education plan focusing on climate change, iconic animals and how our actions matter. Additional commitments to local, sustainable food service choices, zero waste events and carbon neutral events.
